With the new V10 400R, Mercury's racing department presents a new outboard motor. This article reveals what makes the drive so special and how it differs from the V10 Verado (350 and 400 hp)

Mercury's racing division presents its new V10 400R outboard. Mercury already launched the V10 Verado (350 and 400 hp) at the end of last year. Now they are following up with the new racing engine, which is manufactured on the same basis as its Verado brother from a 5.7-litre displacement engine block.

There are of course differences between the Verado and Racing versions: these include a modified rev band, special Racing AMS (Advanced MidSection), modified underwater part and a different design. The latter can be seen at first glance, as the Racing lettering is just as hard to miss as the special racing outfit.

According to the manufacturer, the new V10 has more favourable fuel consumption and higher torque in the lower speed range compared to its predecessor (L6 400R). The new outboard is available in four different shaft lengths: 20", 25", 30" and 35". This makes it suitable for all multi- and single-engine installations. To ensure that the engine runs stably even at high speeds, Mercury has installed a Racing AMS "Advanced MidSection" - a heavy-duty support system with stiffened bearings for the engine.

Mercury specifies more than 6000 rpm

The highlights of the engine control system include: A powerful throttle servo motor, which is responsible for fast throttle response, a fuel pressure sensor, which ensures optimum fuel supply during the acceleration phase and a "Transient Spark Technology", which digitally controls the optimum ignition timing. Mercury Racing specifies 6000 to 6600 rpm as the full load speed.

The press release continues: "The gearbox housings for the Mercury Racing V10 400R are available in two versions. The race-proven "Sport Master" gearbox housing has been specially developed for boats that can exceed 135 km/h. It is characterised by its low water absorption and curved leading edge. It is characterised by its low water absorption and curved leading edge, thanks to which maximum speed and efficiency can be achieved. Alternatively, the 5.44 HD gearbox housing from Mercury Racing is available. It is ideal for heavy boats and powerful multi-engine boats that require a lowered gearcase and benefit from additional stern drive." For both cases, Mercury offers a huge range of specialised propellers.

The engine manufacturer offers DTS shifting, electrohydraulic control and joystick piloting for outboards. Smart Craft technology, which can be used to integrate the "VesselView" multifunction display or "Engine Guardin", for example, has also been installed. As with the new V10 Verado engines, the Adaptive Speed Control system is included as standard. This is an automatic speed control system: as soon as the load changes, for example due to waves or turning manoeuvres, the system adjusts automatically. Another plus point is the alternator, which supplies plenty of power at 150 amps.
