Where Italy ends in the north-east, the adventure begins: the Adriatic region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia offers a coastline of contrasts

The furthest corner, my arse. It is true that Trieste is located in the far north-east of Italy. However, it is anything but isolated. Because at this historical crossroads, the country not only meets Slovenia; another neighbour is also unmistakable in the cityscape, from the magnificent representative buildings in the Piazza dell'Unità to the coffee houses in the side streets: Austria. Until the end of the First World War, Trieste was not only part of the Habsburg Empire, but also its most important seaport - and gateway to the world. Fortunately, borders hardly play a role in modern Europe, and the city has remained international anyway; the almost 30,000 students at the prestigious university alone ensure this. What's more, Trieste is now the capital of the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which stretches from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea.

In addition to the Gulf of Trieste with Muggia, which is almost in Slovenia, the capital itself and the shipyard site of Monfalcone, the area also offers another, completely different aspect with the lagoon of Marano and Grado: calm, shallow water areas that can only be crossed on a network of channels, with reed belts from which the pointed roofs of the casoni - traditional fishermen's huts - rise. Then there are the islands that protect the lagoon from the open sea with a long bar of sand, complete with beaches, promenades and party areas. And - last but not least - an excellent nautical infrastructure for boats and crews.

Nautical information

Gulf of Trieste The bay, which is around ten nautical miles wide and almost 15 nautical miles deep, is an important shipping lane. The terminals in Trieste opposite Muggia are used by the largest container freighters and tankers. The cruise ships built in Monfalcone are also among the largest in the world. For this reason, traffic separation zones have been designated in the Gulf, which must be observed accordingly.

Grado and Marano lagoon The entire area of the interconnected lagoon is extremely shallow, even in the wide, open areas on the western side. Skippers who are particularly unfamiliar with the area must therefore keep strictly to the channels and fairways marked by lateral beacons (usually wooden posts).

The TOP 3 in the district

  1. Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia The largest waterfront square in Europe offers a spectacular backdrop for the colourful life of Trieste
  2. Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta Aquileia as a window into history - from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Church and classical buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites
  3. Stabilimenti balneari In Lignano Sabbiadoro alone there are 38 of the typical Italian lidos - you can even book them online. It's a must-do!
