Greifswald barrage: The background

The barrage and bridge, which were inaugurated in 2016, are highly relevant for the water sports industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Ryck between Greifswald and Greifswald Wieck is home to several clubs and jetties as well as various charter yachts and, last but not least, HanseYachts AG, which releases the new yachts delivered on the lake side via the river.

The main purpose of the largest technical coastal defence structure on the German Baltic coast is to protect against flooding during storm floods. Greifswald is more at risk from flooding than any other town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The most devastating storm surge hit the town in 1872 with a water level of 2.64 metres above sea level - Wieck was almost completely destroyed at that time.
